The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs is set to introduce regulations requiring Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to broadcast their meetings live on local FM stations.

The initiative, announced by the sector Minister, Mahama Ayariga, is intended to improve transparency in local governance and give residents greater access to proceedings and decisions taken by their assemblies.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with development partners, heads of departments and agencies of the Ministry in Accra on Wednesday, September 30, Mr Ayariga said the Ministry would collaborate with local radio stations to make assembly proceedings accessible to the communities they serve.

He explained that assemblies perform legislative functions at the local level and, therefore, their proceedings should be open to the public.

“Every assembly meeting, I’m coming out with regulations and directives that say that every assembly meeting must be aired live on the local FM stations because assemblies are local legislative bodies,” he said.

“Their proceedings must be as transparent and open to the localities the same way that the proceedings of the national assembly, which is a national parliament, is equally,” he added.

According to the Minister, the Ministry is already supporting regional broadcasting stations and plans to utilise these platforms to increase public access to local government proceedings.

He said the proposed directive would help residents stay informed about deliberations and decisions at the assembly level while creating opportunities for greater public participation.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry to strengthen transparency, accountability and citizen participation in Ghana’s local government system.
