Students of the Buduburam Basic School have joined growing calls for teachers to return to the classroom as the nationwide teachers’ strike enters its third day.

During a visit to the school, some students were heard chanting the popular “Yɛnni Abrɛ” Warrior song, expressing their frustration over the continued absence of their teachers.

The development has highlighted the impact of the strike on teaching and learning, with parents and traders at the school also raising concerns about the situation.

Some parents said the absence of teachers has left pupils without adequate supervision, with claims that some students have been sleeping in classrooms, roaming around the community and engaging in other forms of misconduct.

They appealed to the government to urgently engage the striking teacher unions and address their concerns to enable teachers to return to school.

The strike, which began on September 25, 2026, was declared by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).

The unions are demanding, among other issues, the payment of outstanding promotion arrears, progress on negotiations for a new Collective Agreement and the implementation of the Deprived Area Allowance.

Meanwhile, traders operating at the school’s canteen have also complained of reduced sales since the strike began, attributing the decline to the absence of teachers and the disruption to normal school activities.

The parents and traders who spoke to Nana Ansah during the visit urged the government to resolve the outstanding issues with the teachers as quickly as possible.

They said an early resolution would allow teachers to return to the classroom and restore normal teaching and learning at the school.
