A 27-year-old man, identified as Awudu Baba, has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing mobile phones in the Central Region.

Baba was arrested by the Central East Regional Police Command on September 19, 2026, during a random stop-and-search operation along the Kasoa-Bawjiase road.

According to the Central East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Nchor, a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of five mobile phones, including an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung A12.

Five SIM cards were also reportedly found in his possession.

The Police said the suspect allegedly swallowed the SIM cards after realising that he was about to be arrested.

Further investigations reportedly established that the mobile phones had been stolen from the Awutu Bawjiase area in the Central Region.

Baba was subsequently prosecuted before the Ofaakor Circuit Court, where he was found guilty and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

The Central East Regional Police Command is appealing to members of the public who may have lost mobile phones under similar circumstances to contact the Command for identification and possible recovery of their property.

Speaking to the media, DCOP Francis Nchor said the conviction forms part of the Command’s efforts to combat mobile phone theft and protect residents and their property within the region.
