More than 3,000 residents have been displaced in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after the River Dayi overflowed its banks, flooding more than 400 houses across several communities.

Zongo is among the worst-affected areas, with more than half of the community reportedly submerged as floodwaters spread into homes and surrounding areas.

The flooding has forced residents to abandon their homes and seek temporary shelter, with some of the displaced currently being housed in classrooms.

The scale of the disaster has placed significant pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities, prompting calls for urgent assistance from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders.

Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, said the situation had become too overwhelming for the local authorities to manage without external support.

“It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said in an interview with Channel One TV.

Mr Tsekpo commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the security agencies for their intervention in evacuating residents from vulnerable areas and helping to prevent potential loss of lives.

He, however, warned that the emergency remains critical, noting that water levels were still rising despite the heavy rains having subsided.

Authorities are continuing evacuation and relief efforts in the affected communities while appealing for additional support to provide safe shelter and other essential assistance to the displaced residents.

The flooding has also heightened concerns about the safety of communities located along the River Dayi as authorities monitor the situation.
