The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has resumed its market sensitization campaign in Accra, storming the streets of Makola and Kantamanto to clamp down on the sale of uncertified mattresses.

The exercise was aimed at educating retailers and warning them against selling mattresses that have not been approved by the Authority. According to the GSA, some of the seized mattresses are still being sold on the market despite previous warnings.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, Mr. Clement Kubati, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, explained that some retailers are selling mattresses that have not been certified by the GSA, which is against the law.

According to him, while Ghanaians are careful about what they eat, they pay little attention to where they sleep. He emphasized that mattresses can affect one’s health and quality of sleep, hence the need for public education.

“Some of the mattresses being sold can easily be folded with your hands, but you cannot fold a good quality mattress with your hands,” he stated.

Mr. Kubati clarified that the Authority is not seeking to collapse anyone’s business, but to ensure that only quality mattresses from approved companies are sold to the public. He advised the public to avoid fake mattresses that could pose health risks.

He added that the Authority has already engaged some manufacturers, and urged retailers to deal only with approved companies to ensure quality.

He said consumers should look out for the GSA certification mark on any good mattress as proof of approval.

He warned that today’s exercise was just a warning, and that during their next visit, they will seize uncertified products and the law will deal with offenders.
