The High Court is expected to hear the bail application filed by lawyers for senior nursing officer Salomey Awity Baffoe, who is facing charges over her alleged involvement in the “Ghana Jollof” case.

The application, filed on Friday, September 18, is scheduled to be heard at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, at the High Court Complex in Accra.

Salomey’s legal team is seeking her release from custody, with her lawyer, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, expressing confidence that the court will grant the application.

“It was filed on Friday, and the date for hearing is Wednesday at 9 o’clock at the High Court Complex. We are very confident that she’ll be released to go and enjoy life and take care of her children, who have not had their mother for the last 10 days,” he said.

The defence has questioned the continued detention of Salomey, arguing that the police investigation has already been completed and there is no justification for keeping her in custody.

“Demonstrably from the government’s own statement, there’s no outstanding investigation to be conducted. So why is she being held?” the lawyer asked.

Salomey is facing a charge of abetment of crime, to wit, publication of false news, and has pleaded not guilty.

The Adentan Circuit Court remanded her for two weeks on Friday, September 18, following allegations that she assisted Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, identified by the Police as the operator of the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account, to distribute videos and recruit others to circulate the content.

Ms Kodua is believed to be in the United Kingdom.

Police also allege that forensic examination of Salomey’s mobile phone, including audio and video files, together with mobile money transaction records, revealed financial links between the two women.

The bail application comes amid increasing public attention surrounding Salomey’s detention, with her lawyers challenging the grounds for her continued custody.

While the High Court considers the bail request, the substantive case remains before the Adentan Circuit Court, where Salomey is expected to appear again on September 28.

The High Court’s decision on the bail application will determine whether she remains in custody pending further proceedings or is released on bail.
