“When Shatta has no hit song, he uses you for clout” – Abena Moet to Stonebwoy
Ghanaian media personality Abena Moet, has taken a swipe at dancehall star Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., known professionally as Shatta Wale, accusing him of turning artistes’ disagreements into opportunities to keep himself in the spotlight.
Her comments come amid the renewed tension between dancehall musician Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, and rapper Michael Owusu Addo, known as Sarkodie. The disagreement has generated intense discussion online, with Shatta Wale also joining the conversation.
Speaking on the matter, Abena Moet argued that Shatta Wale’s confrontational approach has become part of his strategy for remaining a major talking point in Ghana’s entertainment space. She suggested that artistes who respond to him sometimes unknowingly help sustain the attention around his brand.
“We all know that Shatta Wale has been a bully and will always be that bully. But some people don’t mind working with that bully once in a while. Whether you like it or not, their banter has created relevance for them for years,” she said.
Abena Moet went further to question Shatta Wale’s recent musical impact, arguing that public controversies have helped keep his name prominent even when his songs are not dominating the charts.
“If we should say the truth, apart from ‘Street Crown’, when was the last time Shatta Wale had a hit song? Because whenever he wants the attention, we give it to him; he’s always at the top. Now we’re talking about the jollof Stonebwoy gave Sarkodie, but Shatta Wale has also involved himself. He will always get involved in fights like this. Sometimes, he should just ignore it like Sarkodie did, which doesn’t make him a good person,” Abena Moet said.
She urged Stonebwoy to approach such exchanges with caution, stressing that disagreements within showbiz can sometimes become useful publicity for the people involved.
“Most artistes have been complaining about Sarkodie that he’s a user, but it’s work. I think Stonebwoy should understand that this is a game and it’s business. That’s how it will forever be. As Shatta Wale doesn’t have a hit song today, he will use you on his live for two weeks. At first, he releases about 100 songs in a year, but when was the last time he released a hit song? Either way, this is business for him, and what matters is that his name is in the industry,” she noted.
Her remarks follow Shatta Wale’s recent involvement in the Stonebwoy-Sarkodie dispute, which intensified after Stonebwoy publicly revisited issues surrounding his relationship with Sarkodie. The controversy later took a lighter turn after discussions about a plate of jollof served to Sarkodie became a major talking point online. Shatta Wale subsequently joined the conversation and even hosted a TikTok Live centred on the controversy.
Abena Moet maintained that Stonebwoy should not allow himself to become the source of prolonged content for another artiste.
“If you’re going to act emotional all the time for him to use you, it’s up to you. As the issue was ongoing with Sarkodie, Shatta’s name was mentioned just once, but see what he is doing. He wants something to stand on and use you to chase clout,” she added.
Her assessment adds another dimension to the growing debate over whether celebrity rivalries in Ghana’s music industry are genuine personal conflicts or, in some cases, calculated publicity battles that benefit everyone involved.
