“Disinfect the microphones before you perform” – Sista Afia advises fellow artistes
Ghanaian musician Francisca Gawugah, popularly known as Sista Afia, has urged performers to take greater responsibility for hygiene when using microphones shared at concerts and other public events.
In a post on X, the singer warned that artistes regularly put their mouths close to microphones that may have already been used by several other performers, making sanitation an issue that should not be overlooked.
“I’m going to say something controversial, but my fellow artists need to hear this. PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT! We go from show to show sharing microphones with God knows how many people,” she wrote.
Sista Afia said the frequent movement of musicians between shows means they are often exposed to equipment handled by numerous people throughout the night.
She believes artistes should therefore make microphone cleaning part of their routine before taking the stage.
“Then after shows, some of us come home feeling sick. I honestly think artists should start carrying a small microphone-safe disinfectant/sanitising spray or wipes in their bags and clean the mic before performing,” she said.
The singer also suggested that established performers who can afford it should consider owning personal microphones to minimise their dependence on shared equipment.
“My fellow colleagues, please let’s start taking this seriously. Your health first. Disinfect your mic before you perform,” she added.
Her comments have sparked discussion about hygiene standards at live events and whether event organisers should take greater responsibility for ensuring microphones and other frequently shared equipment are properly sanitised between performances.
