“That’s it!” – KiDi reveals how Stonebwoy picked ‘Liquor’
Ghanaian highlife and Afropop singer Dennis Nana Dwamena, professionally known as KiDi, has revealed how his collaboration with dancehall heavyweight Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, came together almost instantly.
KiDi said he personally visited Stonebwoy at his residence with several songs, expecting the award-winning musician to listen through them before deciding which one suited him. However, Stonebwoy reportedly needed only a few moments to settle on “Liquor.”
“I called Stonebwoy and said I wanted to come to his house, and he said he was home, so I should come. We went to Stonebwoy’s house, and I played him a couple of songs, which were ‘Liquor’ and something else that I thought he would like, and I was pushing for that one. When he heard ‘Liquor’, then he said that’s it, and he didn’t hear the rest of the song. He said he didn’t know how the other songs sounded, but he felt like that’s it,” KiDi recounted.
The recording session produced Stonebwoy’s first verse, but the dancehall star was apparently not satisfied with his initial effort. He later asked KiDi to wait before returning the following day with a completely new verse that the singer described as impressive.
“We did the verse then and then took it home, and he called back that I should relax. He said I had seen what he recorded, but he felt like he pushed himself to do more. The next day, he came with a fresh verse, and it was fire,” he explained.
KiDi also opened up about another side of his creative process, revealing that he keeps a collection of unreleased records he once considered potential global hits. Some of those songs, however, were eventually overtaken by newer material.
“I have songs stored in a folder; the songs there that at the time I made them, I thought were going to be the biggest songs in the world. For some reason, another song came that took over. Once in a while, I revisit that folder with fresh ears and try to listen to some of the songs that we’ve let go,” he shared.
Interestingly, one of those forgotten recordings has now found its way onto his upcoming album, suggesting that some songs may only need the right moment to receive their chance.
“One of them managed to come out of that folder, and it’s going to make the album. I’m hoping that when the time drops, I want you people to hear them and one day, I will tell a story about it,” KiDi disclosed.
The revelation gives fans another reason to anticipate KiDi’s next project, particularly as the singer hints at previously shelved material making an unexpected comeback.
