“We are not rivals; the media has brainwashed you” – Shatta Wale on Stonebwoy

Ghanaian dancehall star Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has pushed back against the long-running narrative that he is locked in a bitter rivalry with fellow dancehall artiste Livingstone Etse Satekla, known professionally as Stonebwoy.

Speaking on TikTok Live, Shatta Wale suggested that the perception of hostility between the two artistes has been amplified by the media and their respective fan bases, rather than reflecting their actual relationship.

He pointed to their current proximity as evidence, revealing that the two musicians live only about two minutes apart.

“If Stonebwoy were my enemy, I wouldn’t live in the same area with him. Stonebwoy doesn’t live at Ashaiman anymore, and I don’t live in the ghetto anymore. We are just two minutes away from each other. I pass in front of his house every time I go out, every single blessed day,” he said.

The ‘On God’ hitmaker questioned why fans continue to frame their relationship as a feud when, according to him, genuine enemies would hardly be comfortable living so close to one another.

“Don’t come and sit here and say me and Stonebwoy are rivals. Under normal circumstances, when you’re not on talking terms with someone, you don’t even want to walk past their door because you’re angry. If we were rivals, then we can’t live two minutes away from each other,” he added.

Shatta Wale also accused the media of shaping public opinion about his relationship with Stonebwoy, while acknowledging that he sometimes pokes fun at his colleague.

“The media has brainwashed you too much, so when you’re talking, it’s as if you know me and Stonebwoy’s life. It is God that has blessed the two of us,” he said.

He recalled their humble beginnings, noting that Stonebwoy came from Ashaiman while he was raised in Lartebiokorshie Zongo. For Shatta Wale, their rise from difficult circumstances to becoming two of Ghana’s most recognised dancehall acts should be celebrated rather than used to fuel division.

“I just like teasing, but nobody should go personal. Let’s do things that will make the music healthy,” he noted.

His comments come against the backdrop of years of competition between the two artistes, particularly after their highly publicised clash at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, which intensified the perception of a personal feud.

Shatta Wale’s latest remarks, however, suggest that while musical competition and playful banter may continue, he does not want fans to interpret them as evidence of genuine hatred between the two dancehall giants.
