Police arrest former boxer Ayitey Powers over alleged death threat
The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” over an alleged threat of death against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo.
According to the Police, the alleged threat was made on Monday, August 24, 2026, and subsequently circulated in a video on social media.
In a statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region issued on Monday, the Accra Regional Police Command said the 46-year-old former boxer was arrested in connection with the alleged threat and is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations.
The Police said the arrest followed the circulation of a video in which Ayitey Powers is alleged to have issued the threat against the NSA Director-General.
The Command said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and determine the appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The Police also urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information about the incident while investigations continue.
