Veteran Nigerian actress Patience Ozokwo, widely recognised as Mama G, has revealed that her frequent portrayal of witches and other antagonistic characters is part of how she seeks to communicate moral lessons through film.

The celebrated actress made the revelation during a livestream conversation with Nigerian streamer Carter Efe, following a question about her repeated appearances as a witch in Nollywood productions.

Rather than viewing the roles negatively, Ozokwo said she believes they give her an opportunity to highlight the dangers of destructive behaviour and make audiences reflect on the consequences of their choices.

“God carved that niche for me to be able to, I think, expose every ill. God created me to expose it. I hate injustice. I hate war. I hate anything that shows rancour.”

The actress explained that whenever she takes on such characters, she deliberately brings out the darker aspects of their behaviour so viewers can recognise the damage caused by wrongdoing.

“So when He gave me that kind of role, I try to bring out everything I know about it, that if you are taking part in any of them, you will be careful and know the end thereof,” she said.

For Ozokwo, the objective goes beyond entertainment. She said her performances are intended to help audiences distinguish between destructive and virtuous lifestyles.

“You know what will happen to you if you live a terrible life. And you know what you gain if you are a good person,” she said.

Her explanation offers a different perspective on her long association with witch and villain characters, suggesting that the roles have become a vehicle through which the veteran actress reinforces themes of morality, justice and accountability in Nollywood.
