The Office of the Attorney General has asked the High Court to reject a bail application filed by Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The opposition was filed on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as the former NPP executive seeks bail while challenging his conviction and sentence through an appeal.

Wontumi’s legal team filed the bail application on Friday, August 7, asking the High Court to allow him to remain out of custody while the appeal is heard and determined.

However, in an affidavit opposing the application, the Attorney General argued that the grounds relied upon by Wontumi in his appeal do not establish any reasonable likelihood that the conviction and sentence will be overturned.

The AG’s office also disputed several claims contained in the affidavit supporting the bail request, insisting that the applicant had failed to demonstrate sufficient grounds to justify his release.

It stated that the grounds contained in the appeal, identified as Exhibit CB2, did not disclose a reasonable prospect of success.

“Contrary to the averments in Paragraphs 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the affidavit in support of the motion, the grounds of appeal contained in Exhibit CB2, the appeal, discloses no reasonable chance of success,” the Attorney General’s office argued.

Beyond the merits of the appeal, the prosecution raised concerns about Wontumi’s ability to remain within Ghana throughout the appeal process.

The Attorney General described him as a significant flight risk and urged the court to consider that factor in determining whether bail should be granted.

The prosecution specifically rejected claims made in several paragraphs of Wontumi’s supporting affidavit regarding his willingness to remain within the jurisdiction.

“That contrary to the averments in Paragraphs 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 20 of the affidavit in support of the motion, the Applicant constitutes a significant flight risk,” the AG stated.

The Attorney General is therefore asking the court to dismiss the bail application as Wontumi seeks to challenge his conviction and sentence through the appellate process.

The High Court is expected to consider the arguments from both sides before determining whether the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman should be granted bail pending the outcome of his appeal.
