The Government of Ghana, together with the Gbeho and affiliated families, has announced plans to organise a state funeral for the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Ghana and the global diplomatic community.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, by the Presidency Communications Office and signed by the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government said the funeral will be held at the forecourt of the State House on Friday, July 31, 2026.

The statement described Ambassador Gbeho as one of Ghana’s most accomplished diplomats and statesmen, noting that he dedicated decades of service to the country through an outstanding career in foreign affairs.

During his career, he rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as Chief Director, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and later Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Gbeho also earned international recognition through his service beyond Ghana. He served as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia before later becoming President of the ECOWAS Commission.

According to the government, the decision to accord him a state funeral reflects appreciation for his remarkable contributions to Ghana’s foreign policy and his distinguished role in international diplomacy.

The government further expressed its heartfelt condolences to the Gbeho family and all those mourning the passing of the respected diplomat.
