The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two men suspected of engaging in drug trafficking following an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the seizure of 170 parcels of suspected Indian hemp in Tamale.

According to a statement issued by the police, the operation was carried out by officers from the Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as Red Maria, under the leadership of Chief Inspector Abu Issahaku. The exercise took place at Katariga on Monday, July 27, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m.

Police said the operation first led to the arrest of 32-year-old Godwin Yamegi, who was allegedly found with two parcels of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp.

During questioning, Yamegi reportedly identified 33-year-old Seth Amekuse as the person who supplied him with the suspected narcotics. Acting on the information, officers traced Amekuse to his residence in Katariga, where he was taken into custody.

A search conducted at the residence uncovered 168 additional parcels of the suspected substance, increasing the total quantity seized during the operation to 170 parcels.

The police stated that both suspects are currently in custody and are assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries. The seized exhibits have been transferred to the Regional Drugs Law Enforcement Unit for further examination and processing.

The Northern Regional Police Command said the successful operation reflects its continued commitment to tackling the illegal drug trade and other criminal activities within the region.

Investigations are continuing as officers work to identify and arrest other individuals believed to be connected to the drug distribution network. The two suspects are expected to appear before court to face the appropriate charges.
