The Manhyia District Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly possessing and transporting substances suspected to be narcotic drugs at the Asawase Market in Kumasi.

According to a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation carried out on July 21, 2026.

The Police said they received credible information that suspected narcotics were being moved through the market concealed inside fertiliser sacks.

Acting on the information, a team led by the Manhyia District Commander, with support from officers from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department and the Zongo Police Station, proceeded to the location where the suspects were apprehended.

The two individuals have been identified as 37-year-old Osman Bassein and 38-year-old Mohammed Abdul-Razak.

Police said a search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses led to the discovery of 13 fertiliser sacks. Further inspection revealed that second-hand clothes had been used to hide 100 compressed parcels containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances.

The recovered items were photographed at the scene in line with standard evidential procedures and have since been preserved for forensic analysis.

“The two suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations. They will be processed in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigations,” the Police Command stated.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has praised members of the public for providing useful information that contributed to the operation.
