Kumawood mourns Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi after battle with kidney disease

Veteran Kumawood actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi has reportedly died after battling kidney failure for an extended period.

The actor’s passing was reported by Kumasi-based Akoma FM on Saturday, July 18, 2026, with the news leaving colleagues, fans and stakeholders in Ghana’s movie industry mourning the loss of a respected figure.

Before his death, Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi’s health condition had attracted attention within the entertainment fraternity, leading to several interventions from fellow actors, public figures and well-wishers to support his medical treatment.

Kumawood actor Kojo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, contributed GH¢10,000 towards his healthcare, while veteran actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu donated GH¢50,000 to support plans for a kidney transplant. The Member of Parliament for Juaben, Francis Owusu-Akyaw, also offered GH¢20,000 to assist with his treatment.

Despite the support and efforts made to help him recover, the actor eventually passed away.

Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi was celebrated for his long-standing contribution to Kumawood, not only as an actor but also as a filmmaker who played a role in shaping Ghana’s local movie industry over the years.

The Kumawood community continues to mourn his passing as fans remember his impact on Ghanaian cinema.
