Ghanaian highlife musician Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr., popularly known as Akwaboah, has responded to the growing debate surrounding his advice that men should consider saving GH¢8,000 every month before marriage.

The musician reignited the conversation after sharing a 2024 sermon by Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye, Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, which highlighted the importance of financial preparation, maturity and the right mindset before entering marriage.

Akwaboah’s post came days after he advised men on X to build their finances before marriage, encouraging them to save GH¢8,000 monthly as part of their preparation for family responsibilities.

In the sermon shared by the musician, Apostle Nyamekye stressed that marriage requires more than romantic feelings, explaining that couples must be prepared for the responsibilities that come with building a family.

“Marriage is not just about love. You will be saying ‘I love you, I love you.’ When you get married and she gets pregnant and you, the man, have to foot the bills for hospital visits, then you will realise you’re married,” Apostle Nyamekye said.

The clergyman further noted that many marital challenges emerge when couples lack the proper mindset and understanding of their roles.

“It is also about your mindset. If both of you do not have a mindset ready for marriage, that is when you begin to see cracks early in their marriage. That is when the man is afraid to come home after work because the wife is always nagging. It is not just love. The couple has to work together to raise the children, support each other and have a successful marriage and family,” he added.

By sharing the sermon, Akwaboah appeared to reinforce his argument that preparation for marriage goes beyond emotions and should include financial and personal readiness.

However, the post attracted mixed reactions from social media users, with some arguing that the issue was not only about money but also character, responsibility and compatibility between partners.

One user commented, “The man is talking about sense and character bro,” while another said, “The pastor is saying it is about sense, you are also saying work before marriage. The woman should also support. If your wife is not supporting you, then she’s killing you slowly.”

Others questioned whether Akwaboah was in a position to offer marriage advice so soon after his own wedding, with one user asking, “Only three days since you got married and you have started giving advice?”

Another person wrote, “Just be vocal… what exactly are you going through???”, suggesting that the musician’s comments could have been influenced by personal experiences.

Some supporters, however, defended the highlife artiste, arguing that his message was not limited to financial wealth but was about becoming fully prepared for marriage.

Akwaboah’s comments have since sparked a wider national conversation about the expectations placed on men before marriage, with many agreeing that successful marriages require a combination of financial planning, emotional maturity and mutual support between couples.
