A man has lost his life after returning to his flooded home to retrieve personal belongings shortly after rescuing his family from rising floodwaters at Kpometey (Freetown) in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The Assembly Member for the area, Mustapha Mohammed, confirmed the incident in an interview with Channel One TV on June 30, 2026, describing it as the only flood-related fatality he could verify within his electoral area.
According to him, the deceased had successfully evacuated his wives and children after floodwaters trapped the family inside their home during the heavy rains.
However, after ensuring they were safe, he reportedly returned to the house to retrieve an item from a wardrobe.
“I learnt he was able to rescue all his family members and move them out after they were trapped by the flood. But according to what I was told, he went back to take something from the wardrobe. Unfortunately, the wardrobe fell on him, and that was it. He wasn’t able to help himself,” Mohammed recounted.
The incident occurred during the recent heavy rains that triggered flooding across several parts of the country, displacing residents, damaging properties and forcing many families to seek temporary shelter. Authorities continue to assess the impact of the floods and support affected communities.
