Police Arrest Suspect in Connection with Murder of UCC Student
The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was apprehended on Sunday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast. His arrest followed sustained intelligence-led operations conducted by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations indicate that Mensah allegedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m.
Police investigations further revealed that the suspect, who claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, transported Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was reportedly last seen before her body was later discovered.
The arrest is considered a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the death of the Level 200 Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource Management) student, whose disappearance had sparked concern among students and the wider public.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that additional information will be provided as the case develops.
