Shatta Wale sparks reactions after introducing GH₵100 Gold card membership
Ghanaian dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known in showbiz as Shatta Wale, has stirred controversy online after unveiling a paid membership programme for members of his fan base, the Shatta Movement.
The award-winning musician announced the initiative on X on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, explaining that the programme is designed to officially register members of the Shatta Movement and create a proper database containing the identities and details of supporters across the world.
As part of the new system, fans will be required to pay GH₵100 to obtain a Gold Card membership, which Shatta Wale says will grant them access to exclusive services and benefits connected to the movement.
He wrote: “We are ready to officialise our Shatta Movement members with real identity and data. Get your Gold Card membership after registration with just GH₵100 to enjoy premium services around the world.”
Shortly after the announcement, social media users began reacting strongly to the initiative, with many questioning the decision to charge supporters for official membership.
Some critics argued that loyal fans should not be expected to pay to belong to a movement they have supported for years, especially considering Shatta Wale’s repeated claims about earning huge sums from performances and international deals.
Others also debated whether the membership package would truly offer enough value to justify the GH₵100 registration fee.
Despite the criticism, some supporters defended the dancehall star, saying the initiative could help build a more organised fan community while creating opportunities and benefits for dedicated members worldwide.
Shatta Wale, who remains one of Ghana’s most influential and controversial musicians, is widely known for his strong connection with his fan base, the Shatta Movement, which has grown into one of the biggest entertainment movements in the country over the years.
The latest announcement has once again placed the outspoken artiste at the centre of online conversations, with opinions sharply divided over whether the paid membership programme is a smart business move or an unnecessary burden on fans.
