Man jailed four years for stealing musical instruments from Church in Hohoe

A 27-year-old man, Mohammed Rafiu, has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for unlawfully entering a church and stealing musical equipment belonging to the congregation.

According to a statement issued by the Volta North Regional Police Command on June 9, 2026, Rafiu was arrested on June 5 after witnesses spotted him near Faith International Ministry Church in Hohoe carrying a suspicious sack.

The witnesses reportedly became concerned about his actions and decided to inspect the contents of the sack. Their search revealed several items belonging to the church, including an amplifier, an equalizer, and a mixer and crossover machine.

“The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured a conviction of a 27-year-old man, Mohammed Rafiu, for making unlawful entry and stealing church musical instruments at Hohoe in the Volta Region,” the statement said.

Police said Rafiu was subsequently arrested and taken to the Hohoe Police District, where he admitted to the offences during questioning.

“The accused was arrested and brought to the Hohoe Police District, where he admitted to police the charges levelled against him,” the statement added.

Rafiu was arraigned before the Hohoe Circuit Court on Monday, June 8, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing.

Following his plea, the court convicted him on both counts and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment for unlawful entry and four years for stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of four years in prison.

“The accused was put before the Hohoe Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty on two counts and was convicted and sentenced to three years for unlawful entry and four years for stealing, with both sentences to run concurrently,” the police statement noted.

The conviction forms part of ongoing efforts by the police to combat theft and protect property within communities across the Volta Region.
