“Prison changed my life” — Akuapem Poloo reveals journey into Islam

Former controversial socialite and actress Rosemond Brown, widely known as Akuapem Poloo, has shared details about the personal journey that led to her conversion to Islam, revealing that her prison experience became a major turning point in her life.

Speaking during an interview, the actress explained that the advice she received from prison officers after serving her jail term deeply influenced her decision to change her lifestyle and embrace a new path.

She said, “That was after I had gone to prison. A lot of prison officers talked to me. They advised me that I was already a calm and collected person, so I should just behave myself, be cool and even get married.”

Akuapem Poloo explained that the experience inspired her to leave behind the controversies that once dominated headlines and focus instead on rebuilding her life and securing a better future for her children.

Addressing public speculation surrounding her conversion to Islam, the social media personality firmly denied rumours that a wealthy Muslim man had influenced her decision to become a Muslim. According to her, the choice was entirely personal and spiritually motivated.

“People thought I was converting because of a man. There were rumours that there was a certain Alhaji who had sponsored my trip to Mecca. No, it was my own decision,” she stated.

In a surprising revelation, she further claimed that her pilgrimage to Mecca was sponsored by the King of Saudi Arabia after she was selected for a fully funded Hajj trip.

“He contacted the embassy in Ghana. There was a letter signed by him saying I had been selected to go on an all-expenses-paid Hajj trip,” she said.

Akuapem Poloo also admitted that her family initially found it difficult to accept her decision to embrace Islam, as they feared she was abandoning Christianity for another faith. However, she insisted that her belief in God remains unchanged despite following a different religious path.

“My folks didn’t really like that I had decided to convert. They thought I was leaving to worship another God. But it isn’t the case. We are all worshipping the same God, just through different paths,” she explained.

Despite the initial resistance from her relatives, the actress said she received overwhelming love and support from members of the Muslim community, who helped her and her child in several ways after her conversion.

“They provided clothes for me and my children. They gave me meat during Salah. People would call me and offer to pay my child’s school fees,” she revealed.

Akuapem Poloo has remained one of Ghana’s most talked-about entertainment personalities over the years, often making headlines for controversies surrounding her social media activities and legal troubles. In 2021, she was sentenced on charges linked to the publication of inappropriate content involving her son, a case that sparked widespread public debate across the country.

Her latest revelation, however, paints the picture of a woman seeking transformation, spiritual growth, and a fresh beginning after one of the most difficult periods of her life.
