GARCC to demolish unauthorized Lorry Stations on waterways to tackle Accra flooding

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has announced the immediate demolition of unauthorized lorry stations and transport terminals sited on waterways to help reduce Accra’s perennial flooding.

At a press briefing, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo said the decision follows a directive from the Ghana Meteorological Agency to take urgent steps to minimize flooding in parts of the capital.

According to the minister, key intervention programs are already underway across the region. These include desilting drains and gutters, removing dredged material, and clearing obstructions from drainage channels to allow free flow of rainwater.

She added that the measures form part of the government’s response to recent flood victims. The government, in collaboration with NADMO, has also distributed relief items to affected families.

Linda Ocloo stressed that flood prevention is not solely the government’s responsibility, and called for collective discipline and active participation from all Ghanaians to keep waterways clear.
