“I’ve never asked a man for money before; I just want Love” — Sista Afia
Ghanaian Afro-pop, highlife, and Afrobeats singer-songwriter, Francisca Gawugah, popularly known as Sista Afia, has revealed that she has never taken money from a man while in a relationship. She also opened up about her expectations when it comes to love and relationships.
In an interview, Sista Afia stated that whenever she is in a relationship, she makes it a point not to ask her partner for money. According to her, she appreciates gifts and support from a man, but she does not believe in depending on him financially.
“I have never asked for money before. When I date a man, I don’t ask him for money because I make my own money. It doesn’t matter whether the man is rich or not. If I enter a relationship with that mentality, I will only stress myself. Whatever you buy for me, I will appreciate, but don’t expect me to ask you for money,” she said.
The songstress further claimed that many Ghanaian men feel uncomfortable dating financially independent women because they believe such women cannot be controlled. According to her, some men prefer women they can dominate rather than women who can contribute financially to the relationship.
“Ghanaian men feel that when a woman has money, they can’t control her. Most Ghanaian men prefer to take care of women they can control. Their mentality is low. If you have a woman who brings money home, respects you, and obeys you, why should you think she is competing with you?” she questioned.
Addressing whether she could put her celebrity status aside to become a good wife, Sista Afia said any man who doubts her ability to play that role lacks confidence and suffers from low self-esteem.
“A man who thinks that way has low self-esteem. You should even thank God for giving you a hardworking woman who contributes financially like me,” she added.
Speaking about what she looks for in a man, Sista Afia explained that she simply wants someone who understands and genuinely loves her for who she is. She added that she has no issue dating an ordinary “9-to-5” man and is willing to support and build a future together with the right partner.
“I genuinely love. Who said I don’t date regular guys? Aren’t they men too? I know many women who have helped their husbands achieve great success in life, and I am one of those women. I just haven’t found someone who understands me for the woman I am. I just want a soft life and to be treated like the woman I am,” she stated.
However, the ‘Jeje’ hitmaker clarified that she is currently not searching for a relationship.
“I am not actually searching,” she emphasized.
Sista Afia transitioned from a nursing career in the United Kingdom into Ghana’s music industry in 2015 and is widely known for hit songs such as ‘Jeje’ and ‘Asuoden’.
