Volta Region: 3 dead, 17 injured in fatal Kpeve-Asikuma road crash

Three people have lost their lives while 17 others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash at Woadze near Kpeve on the Kpeve–Asikuma stretch in the Volta Region.

The accident occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026, and involved a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C, which was travelling from Abotuase in the Greater Accra Region to Ningo.

According to a statement from the Ghana National Fire Service (Ghana National Fire Service), personnel from the Peki Fire Station received a distress call at about 9:58 a.m. and quickly responded to the scene to rescue trapped passengers.

The vehicle was carrying 20 passengers — 11 males, five females, and four children — when the crash occurred, leaving it severely damaged.

Fire officers managed to rescue 13 adults and four children from the wreckage.

However, three adults — two men and one woman — were confirmed dead at the scene.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the Kpando Divisional Command and the Ghana Ambulance Service from Afadjato and Juapong later conveyed the injured and the bodies of the deceased to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital for treatment and preservation.

“The rescue team swiftly extricated thirteen adults and four children trapped in the wreckage, while personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Ambulance Service assisted in conveying the injured and deceased to hospital,” the statement noted.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Meanwhile, the GNFS has urged motorists to observe road safety regulations strictly and avoid speeding to help reduce road traffic accidents across the country.
