A female student diagnosed with autism has taken part in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the Lord Shines Examination Centre in the Gomoa East District without any specialised support from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
According to reports, the student experiences difficulties with communication and typically requires additional assistance during examinations.
The Centre Supervisor disclosed that no official provisions were made to support the candidate. However, he indicated that the only measure taken was to grant her extra time to complete her papers.
The situation has raised concerns about the level of support available for students with special educational needs during national examinations.
A total of 296 candidates are writing the exams at the Lord Shines Examination Centre, with two absentees—one male and one female.
