Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has alleged that individuals within government are supporting activist Angel Maxine in the ongoing debate over Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Speaking in an interview on Star FM Ghana, he claimed that the activist is being represented by lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, whom he described as a known member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) with links to government activities.
“I don’t want to glorify him because he’s just a tip of the iceberg. The bigger people behind him, the government machinery, I have reason to believe so,” he said.
Mr. Fordjour suggested that the lawyer’s involvement points to wider political connections, referencing his alleged participation in a government delegation to the United Nations General Assembly alongside the President.
He further argued that developments following Ghana’s participation at the UN appeared to coincide with what he described as a shift in the government’s position on LGBTQ+ issues.
“And you remember it was just this UN trip which brought about the government’s sudden U-turn on LGBT matters,” he claimed.
The MP also questioned what he described as selective targeting of individuals supporting the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
“Why didn’t they attack everybody championing the bill? Why single out a few people? Is it a coincidence?” he asked.
He further criticised the government’s apparent change in priorities, referencing comments made after a meeting between the President and civil society organisations, where concerns about basic needs were highlighted.
Mr. Fordjour maintained that these developments raise questions about the consistency of the government’s position on the controversial bill.
