Traditional leaders (Nananom) of Gomoa Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have inspected an abandoned and deteriorating government cold store facility in the community.
According to the chiefs, the fully furnished project was completed and commissioned in 2008 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
However, it was abandoned in 2009, briefly became operational again in 2012, but was shut down a few months later.
Reports further indicate that the facility resumed operations in 2020 under a private businessman, who used it to store fruits. However, it has once again been left unused just a few months after the takeover.
Speaking in an interview, the Odikro of Gomoa Nyanyano, Nana Kwame Addy Wiabo VII, called on the government, as a matter of urgency, to renovate and operationalise the facility to create employment opportunities for the youth in the area.

Some traditional leaders also expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of the facility, noting that the machines are rusting and the structure is gradually becoming unfit for use.
They urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action to restore the cold store to support fish storage and boost local economic activities.
Meanwhile, fish sellers in the community have lamented the impact of the abandoned project on their livelihoods.

According to them, the cold store previously served as a reliable storage facility, but its current state has made it difficult to preserve fish, negatively affecting their businesses.
