The Ministry of the Interior has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a statutory public holiday to mark May Day, also known as Workers’ Day.

In a statement issued on April 27, 2026, and signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry announced that the day should be observed nationwide.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, May 1, 2026, marks Workers’ Day (May Day), which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.

May Day is celebrated globally to recognise the contributions of workers to national development. In Ghana, it is traditionally marked with parades, speeches by labour leaders and government officials, and discussions focused on workers’ welfare.

The occasion also provides a platform for organised labour to engage government on key issues such as wages, job security, and workplace safety.
