Seven inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons have been released after a group called Kosco Fun Club at Atonso-Fabi Junction pay for their fines.
The prisoners, Elijah Opoku, Kofi Afriyie, Akwasi Owusu, Kofi Gyamfi, Akwasi Sampson, Fuseini Mohammed, and Joseph were convicted some months ago after each of them failed to pay a court fine.
Speaking in an interview with the PRO for Kosco Fun Club, Mr. Kwame Appiah said, his outfit saw it necessary to pay certain fines of about GHc10,000 to free the seven inmates who were convicted on the basis of some minor cases.
The ex-convicts were given transportation of GHc150 each and a ‘takeaway Jollof’.
DSP Richard Bukari, Ashanti Regional Prisons PRO who spoke to Oyerepa Online on the other hand expressed much gratitude to the Fun club for its kind gesture.
He said the release of the ex-convicts will help reduce congestion at the prison.
The Prisons PRO however entreated all stakeholders to emulate the kind gesture of Kosco Fun Club.
He declared that there are many inmates who have been convicted as a result of some minor cases, therefore, all stakeholders should take it upon themselves to settle their court fines in order to be freed. Adding that, the step could reduce overcrowding in the various prisons of the country.
