Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the current government to complete and operationalize all stalled Agenda 111 hospitals, a project his administration initiated to construct 111 hospitals nationwide and improve access to healthcare.
Speaking over the weekend at the launch of the Kyebi Government Hospital’s centenary celebrations, organized by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional State, Former President Akufo-Addo stressed that completing these hospitals would significantly enhance healthcare delivery across Ghana.
He emphasized that healthcare should not be politicized, noting that while not all projects were completed during his term, continuity is essential. “We must also be honest, not every project was realized, not every project was completed. At some facilities, we reached advanced stages that could not be finished before our term ended. Agenda 111 must be continued. Continuity, not disruption, is how health systems succeed,” he said.
The Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa State, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, also highlighted the urgent need to retool the century-old facility. He appealed to stakeholders to collaborate in improving healthcare delivery in the area. “I am not the only one frustrated but the nurses and doctors over there are equally frustrated. 100 years later, there is no scan machine in Kyebi Hospital, there is no quality laboratory in Kyebi Hospital,” he said.
Dr. Isaac Adu-Opoku Antwi, Medical Superintendent of Kyebi Government Hospital, raised additional concerns over the current situation, pointing out that children and pregnant women share the same wards, negatively affecting the quality of care. He called on the government to construct a maternity block, a children’s block, a physiotherapy unit, and housing for health workers to address these gaps.
The former President’s remarks underscore the importance of sustaining infrastructure projects beyond political terms to ensure accessible and quality healthcare for all Ghanaians.
