Police officers have shot and killed a suspected armed robber following a gunfight along the Atebubu–Ejura stretch of the Ejura-Atebubu-Yeji highway in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on March 25, 2026, around 11:10 p.m., when personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters were conducting routine patrols near Kasei.
According to the police, the patrol team encountered a gang of about five armed men who attempted to stop their unmarked vehicle using flashlights. The suspects, armed with an AK-47 rifle, single-barrel guns, machetes, and sticks, reportedly opened fire to force the officers to halt.
“The police team returned fire, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, one suspected robber was shot and fell, while the other members fled into a nearby bush,” the police statement noted.
A search of the injured suspect led to the recovery of several items, including a single-barrel gun, five live cartridges, two spent cartridges, two spent AK-47 rounds, six live AK-47 rounds, multiple mobile phones (a Samsung smartphone, a Tecno Spark 5, and six keypad phones), a machete, a black hat, a side bag containing coins and two wristwatches, and GH¢310 in cash.
The suspect was rushed to Atebubu Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been preserved at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the remaining members of the robbery gang who escaped into the bush.
