More than 60 plantain chips sellers at Mallam Junction and Bayard in the Greater Accra Region have staged a demonstration following allegations that they use rubber and other harmful substances to roast plantain.
The aggrieved traders said their businesses have been severely affected after a viral video circulated on social media, claiming that some sellers burn rubber and other hazardous materials when roasting plantain.
According to the demonstrators, the allegations are false and have damaged their reputation, leading to a significant drop in sales.
They insist that they use only approved ingredients and fuel sources such as oil, charcoal, and firewood in preparing their food.
The sellers are therefore calling on the public to disregard the viral claims and are urging authorities to investigate the matter to restore confidence in their businesses.
They also appealed to those behind the video to retract the claims, stressing that the misinformation is threatening their livelihoods.
