Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has earned a strong position in the first-ever QS World
University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa 2026, placing fourth among the seven Ghanaian
universities featured on the list and 48th in the Sub-Saharan African countries.

The rankings which were released on 12th February 2026 assessed 69 universities across 21
countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Unlike global tables that rely heavily on long-established
prestige indicators, this regional framework is tailored to reflect Africa’s higher education
landscape. It evaluates institutions based on research output and impact, academic reputation,
employer perception, sustainability, global engagement and student experience.

KsTU recorded an overall score of 17.1, with its research performance emerging as a standout
strength. The University achieved an impressive 84.3 citations per paper, one of the strongest
citation impacts among Ghanaian institutions alongside 17.9 papers per faculty member.

These
figures highlight the growing influence, visibility and practical relevance of research produced
at KsTU, even as the Institution continues to build its academic reputation score of 12.7.
Within Ghana’s representation, the University of Ghana leads nationally, followed by Kwame
Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Cape Coast. KsTU follows,
while Ashesi University, Catholic University of Ghana and University of Mines and
Technology.

Overall, Ghana’s inclusion of seven institutions signals steady national progress
in research visibility, academic competitiveness and graduate preparedness.

For KsTU, the ranking carries particular significance. The University continues to strengthen
programmes closely aligned with industry needs across various programmes ensuring that
graduates leave with practical skills and hands-on experience valued by employers.

Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh, the Vice-Chancellor described the achievement as the result of
sustained effort across the University community, noting that commitment to impactful
research, staff dedication to institutional support systems and student engagement in practical
learning have all contributed to this milestone.

Within the QS Sub-Saharan Africa framework, KsTU remains the highest-ranked technical
university in Ghana, leading its specialised peers particularly in research impact indicators. The
result reinforces the University’s strategic direction and growing influence within the region’s
higher education landscape.
