Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31.
The former Vice President won convincingly with 110,643 votes, securing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, and earning the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong finished third after polling 36,303 votes, equivalent to 18.53 per cent.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum came fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent), while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fifth with 402 votes, accounting for 0.21 per cent.
The nationwide primary attracted the participation of more than 211,000 accredited delegates, who voted at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies.
The process was conducted under tight security and closely supervised by party officials to ensure transparency and credibility. Party leaders and observers described the exercise as peaceful, with only minor incidents recorded during voting and collation.
Early results pointed to a strong performance by Dr. Bawumia, indicating broad-based support among delegates.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to delegates for their confidence in him and pledged to run a unifying and inclusive campaign ahead of the 2028 elections.
He appealed to party supporters, including those who backed other contenders, to close ranks and work together to secure victory for the NPP at the national level.
