President John Dramani Mahama has warned that Ghana’s security environment remains fragile amid growing instability in the West African sub-region, calling for a coordinated national response that goes beyond the efforts of the armed forces and security agencies.
Speaking at the graduation parade of the Ghana Military Academy in Teshie, Accra, on Friday, January 30, President Mahama identified violent extremism, terrorism, and transnational crime as major threats to peace and stability, particularly along Ghana’s northern borders.
He noted that modern security challenges are becoming increasingly complex, driven by the rise of non-state actors and asymmetric warfare, which have reshaped the global security landscape. These evolving threats, he said, require a comprehensive and cohesive national approach.
“Safeguarding our national security is a shared responsibility,” President Mahama emphasized. “It involves not only the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies, but also citizens, communities, traditional authorities, civil society, and government.”
The President urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and security-conscious, cooperating with state institutions to prevent and respond effectively to threats that could undermine national peace and cohesion.
He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening national security strategies and supporting the armed forces to ensure continued peace and stability across the country.
