A pressure group calling itself Concerned Residents of Kwahu is calling on Dr Bryan Acheampong to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearership race, accusing him of allegedly orchestrating and sponsoring the protracted chieftaincy dispute in Kwahu in the Eastern Region.

According to the group, their demand is based on recent claims made by Opare Ansah, a leading member of the NPP, who alleged that Dr Acheampong once threatened to boycott the party’s campaign activities in the Eastern Region during the 2024 electioneering period.

In a video clip from an interview on Asempa FM, Opare Ansah claimed that Dr Acheampong warned party officials against paying a courtesy call on the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II, during a campaign tour to Abetifi.

“Bryan helped us in the Eastern Region, but he also caused harm at some point. On the day we were going to Abetifi, the regional chairman sent me a message saying that if we made the mistake of going to greet the Kwahumanhene, he (Dr. Bryan Acheampong) would boycott both the Kwahu and Abetifi programmes,” Opare Ansah stated.

He further noted that tensions between Dr Acheampong and the Kwahumanhene had spilled over into party politics at the time.

Owusu Nketiah, Convener for Concerned Residents of Kwahu, said the statement by Opare Ansah confirms what they describe as “long-held intelligence that Dr Bryan Acheampong played a key role in the failed attempt to destool the Kwahumanhene—an episode they claim has plunged Kwahu into prolonged chieftaincy disputes, thereby stalling development in the area.”

In a press statement, the group argued that “such a character does not deserve to lead a political party such as the NPP,” stressing that internal unity and respect for traditional authority are critical for national leadership.

The group further warned that the NPP risks losing the massive electoral support it has consistently enjoyed from the Kwahu area since 1992, where the party is regarded as having a stronghold, should Dr Bryan Acheampong emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.

They therefore urged the leadership of the NPP to take the concerns of the people of Kwahu seriously to protect the party’s electoral fortunes and preserve peace in the traditional area.

Background

Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II, born Eugene Kwasi Asante Boadi, is a chartered accountant who was lawfully nominated, selected, and enstooled as Kwahuhene on June 5, 2017, following the passing of Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II on September 9, 2014.

Despite his recognition and active performance of customary and statutory functions as Kwahuhene, some kingmakers performed rites to declare him destooled.

They claimed that Daasebre had brought disrepute to the stool following his resignation as Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) after allegations of financial impropriety were levelled against him by a businessman in October 2025.

Baffuor Akoto Osei was purportedly enstooled in January 2025 under the stool name Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, to replace Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II.

However, some chiefs and elders of Kwahu seriously disagreed with the destoolment.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Concerned Residents of Kwahu Call for Withdrawal of Dr Bryan Acheampong from NPP Flagbearership Race

Kwahu, Eastern Region – January 12, 2026

We, the Concerned Residents of Kwahu, wish to formally call on Dr. Bryan Acheampong to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearership race ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for January 31.

Our call is borne out of deep concern over the protracted chieftaincy dispute in the Kwahu Traditional Area, which we strongly believe has been worsened by the alleged actions and political interference of Dr Bryan Acheampong. This dispute has undermined peace, unity, and development in Kwahu and continues to divide our people.

Most of the applause and praises of Mahama’s govt AI-generated – Bryan Acheampong

Dr Bryan Acheampong is currently contesting the NPP flagbearership alongside Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ing Kwabena Agyepong and Dr Osei Adutwum.

Our position has been reinforced by recent public comments made by Opare Ansah, a leading member of the NPP, who alleged that Dr Acheampong threatened to boycott party campaign activities in the Eastern Region during the 2024 general elections.

In an interview aired on Asempa FM, Opare Ansah stated that Dr Acheampong warned party officials against paying a courtesy call on the Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyepong II, during a campaign visit to Abetifi, threatening to boycott both Kwahu and Abetifi campaign programmes if such a visit took place.

These remarks, in our view, confirm long-standing intelligence within Kwahu that Dr Bryan Acheampong played a key role in attempts to undermine the authority of the Kwahumanhene and destabilise the traditional area.

We believe these actions have contributed significantly to the lingering chieftaincy conflict that has stalled development and eroded social cohesion in Kwahu.

As Concerned Residents of Kwahu, we firmly state that any individual seeking to lead a political party and, ultimately, the nation must demonstrate respect for traditional authority, commitment to unity and the capacity to promote peace rather than division.

We further wish to caution the leadership of the NPP that the party risks losing the overwhelming electoral support it has consistently enjoyed in Kwahu since 1992, an area widely regarded as one of the party’s strongholds, should Dr Bryan Acheampong be selected as the party’s presidential candidate.

We therefore respectfully urge:

Dr Bryan Acheampong to withdraw from the NPP flagbearership race in the interest of party unity and peace in Kwahu.

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party needs to take the concerns of the people of Kwahu seriously and act to protect the party’s electoral fortunes.

All political actors are to desist from interfering in chieftaincy matters and allow lawful and customary processes to prevail.

The peace, unity, and development of Kwahu must not be sacrificed on the altar of partisan ambition.

Signed:

Owusu Nketiah
