The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for closer collaboration between traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service, urging the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to allow chiefs to serve as key partners in community policing.
He appealed during a historic courtesy visit to the IGP on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised the need for deeper, institutionalised cooperation between the police and traditional leaders to strengthen security and build community trust.
The Asantehene further advised that police personnel should be trained to understand the customs and traditions of the communities they serve, noting that cultural awareness would enhance engagement, mediation, and conflict resolution.
“I have come to join you, IGP, in calling for deeper institutionalised collaboration between traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service. Let chiefs serve as allies in community policing. Let officers be trained to understand the customs of the people they protect.
“Let dialogue precede deployment and mediation precede confrontation. This is not softness but intelligence,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated.
