Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has retained leading legal practitioners in the United States to challenge efforts to extradite him to Ghana.
Dr Ayine made the revelation on Thursday, December 18, 2025, while speaking at the government’s Accountability Series, shortly after Ghana formally submitted an extradition request to US authorities.
According to the Attorney General, it is expected that any individual facing extradition would seek to contest the process through the courts.
“The person who is the subject of an extradition will fight it in court. I have been informed that Mr Ofori-Atta has hired some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” Dr Ayine stated, adding that the move does not deter Ghanaian authorities.
He explained that extradition proceedings in the United States are handled within the federal judicial system and allow for several stages of appeal.
“He has the right to challenge any decision through the federal district court, the circuit court and, ultimately, the US Supreme Court if he is dissatisfied,” he noted.
While acknowledging that the legal process could be prolonged, Dr Ayine expressed confidence in Ghana’s extradition request, stressing that the matter is now before the US courts to determine whether the former finance minister will be returned to Ghana to face trial.
