The Government of Ghana has officially endorsed the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report submitted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, describing it as a comprehensive framework for lasting peace and reconciliation in Bawku and its environs.
In a statement released on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the government reiterated the Supreme Court’s recognition of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba, emphasizing that no individual or group is permitted to contest his authority.
The government also accepted the recommendation for Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who was installed as a rival claimant, to be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri to assume an alternative traditional role, with the state ensuring his safe relocation.
To address the socio-economic fallout from the prolonged conflict, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the creation of a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund. Scheduled for disbursement between 2026 and 2028, the fund will support development projects in infrastructure, health, education, irrigation, security, and commerce.
A high-level committee, chaired by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, will oversee the fund. Other members include the Upper East Regional Minister, Donaltus Akamuguri, and the Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga.
The government has called on traditional authorities, political leaders, youth groups, and the wider public to actively support the peace process, emphasizing that the responsibility for lasting reconciliation is collective, with no winners or losers.
