John Odartey Lamptey, the man seen in a widely circulated video physically assaulting his wife, has been granted bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties after pleading not guilty to seven charges in court.
Lamptey faces prosecution under Sections 1(b)(i) and 3(2) of the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732), which cover physical assault and domestic abuse.
The case attracted national attention after the video surfaced online, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting victims of domestic violence. The footage reportedly shows Lamptey attacking his naked spouse in the foyer of their home after inviting her over.
During the hearing, the presiding magistrate imposed bail conditions requiring Lamptey to appear for all future court dates and to have no contact with the victim.
The case has been adjourned as investigations continue. Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding the assault to determine whether additional charges should be filed. Meanwhile, two of Lamptey’s accomplices remain in custody.
