The mediation committee chaired by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, tasked with resolving the protracted Bawku conflict, has completed its work and submitted its final report to President John Dramani Mahama.
In its findings, the committee affirmed that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azorka II is the constitutionally recognised and legitimate Paramount Chief of the Kusasi Traditional Areas and Bawku in the Upper East Region.
The committee also recommended the arrest of individuals who continue to present themselves as rival traditional rulers, stressing that such actions are necessary to protect the authority and legitimacy of the recognised chief and to restore lasting peace in the area.
The mediation team was set up by the previous administration under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to address recurring violence, insecurity, and destruction of property that have plagued the Bawku area for years.
Speaking on the mediation process, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said both parties had agreed to and committed themselves to the peace process. He added that responsibility for implementing the committee’s recommendations now lies with President Mahama, whose actions would be crucial to ensuring sustainable peace in Bawku.
