Ernest Owusu Bempah, a member of the campaign team for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, has cast doubt on the economic credibility of former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, arguing that the former head of the Economic Management Team has little to offer Ghanaians on the state of the economy.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr. Owusu Bempah said Dr. Bawumia, once touted as Ghana’s economic “wizkid,” failed to deliver on the mandate for which he was brought into high office.
He noted that President Akufo-Addo introduced Dr. Bawumia into frontline politics on the strength of his economic expertise, highlighting his PhD in economics and his reputation as a technocrat.
However, according to him, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership of the Economic Management Team did not meet expectations.
“What message will Bawumia give to Ghanaians in terms of the economy? We have a leader who emerged into Ghanaian politics because of his economic expertise. President Akufo-Addo said he brought him because of his economic prowess,” he stated.
Mr. Owusu Bempah added that as the country approached the last election, Dr. Bawumia shifted focus from core economic issues to digitalisation, at a time when citizens were seeking concrete solutions to Ghana’s economic challenges.
“Unfortunately, prior to the election, he (Dr. Bawumia) veered off from the economy to digitalisation at the time Ghanaians wanted to hear something concrete about the economic situation in the country. He couldn’t tell us his message on the Ghanaian economy,” he said.
