The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to deliver his final ruling on the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute today, Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace.
Earlier this year, President John Dramani Mahama tasked the Asantehene with leading renewed efforts to resolve the decades-old conflict.
Otumfuo’s engagement in the latest mediation process began in April, when he met with delegations from the opposing factions between April 28 and 30 to reignite dialogue and lay the groundwork for meaningful negotiations.
Although discussions were briefly halted, proceedings resumed on May 13. At that point, the Asantehene observed that the talks had helped foster a period of relative calm in the municipality.
For years, Bawku has grappled with intermittent violence, sporadic attacks, and heightened tensions—leading to loss of lives, movement restrictions, and recurring curfews. These challenges have disrupted livelihoods, strained community relations, and intensified nationwide calls for a lasting solution.
According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s session represents the climax of months of rigorous consultations and peace-building efforts.
Residents and national observers alike remain hopeful that the Asantehene’s concluding pronouncement will chart a new path toward reconciliation, stability, and development in the conflict-affected area.
