Presidential aspirant Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has outlined a bold vision for decentralizing Ghana’s government and catalyzing economic growth across all regions, with a particular focus on the Western Region.
Speaking to party supporters, Ken Ohene Agyapong criticized the concentration of key industries and government agencies in Accra, despite the Western Region being the hub of Ghana’s oil and gas resources.
“In the Western Region, we have oil, we have gas, and almost every major energy resource comes from there — yet all the key industries connected to these resources have been moved to Accra. How does that make sense?” he asked.
He noted that regional capitals remain largely inactive during the week, except for market areas, highlighting the urgent need to move government operations closer to the people.
Ken Ohene Agyapong revealed his plan to relocate key ministries and agencies to the regions where they naturally belong:
Western Region — Ministry of Energy
Central Region — Ministry of Education
Eastern Region — Ministry of Trade & Industry
Ashanti Region — Lands, Forestry, Works & Housing
Volta Region — Ministry of Tourism
Northern Region — Ministry of Agriculture
Bono Region — Ministry of Environment, Science & Technology
He further explained that moving the Ministry of Energy and its agencies — including VRA, GRIDCo, ECG, the Petroleum Commission, BOST, GNPC, and NPA — to the Western Region would create a ripple effect in economic activity. Workers would relocate, prompting increased demand for housing, which would attract investors and create jobs for plumbers, carpenters, masons, painters, welders and other skilled workers.
“When people move, business moves. When business moves, the regional economy begins to grow,” Mr. Agyapong said.
He concluded by urging voters to support leadership that is visionary, development-oriented, and capable of transforming Ghana’s regions into engines of growth. “This is how you build a region. This is how you strengthen a nation,” he said.
