NAIMOS officer dies in motor accident near Obuasi during anti-galamsey operation

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has confirmed the death of a National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) officer following a motor accident near Obuasi Airport on November 19, 2025.

According to the Ministry, the accident involved a five-member NAIMOS team that was en route to carry out a major anti-galamsey operation in the area.

Paa Kwesi Schandorf, the Ministry’s Media Relations Officer, stated that the operation was part of nationwide efforts to curb illegal mining activities. He confirmed that one officer died at the scene, while the remaining four sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The Ministry said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident and reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of all frontline personnel engaged in the fight against illegal mining.

“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources regrets to announce that a team of five members of NAIMOS was involved in a fatal motor accident near Obuasi Airport. One member of the taskforce has been confirmed dead, while the remaining four sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical care,” the statement read.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and expressed concern for the injured team members, wishing them a speedy recovery and assuring them of full support throughout their treatment and rehabilitation.
