Many people, suspected to be illegal miners, are feared dead in the underground tunnels of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in the Western Region.
They are said to have suffocated after an unidentified smoke, believed to have resulted from a blast, filled the underground with carbon gas.
The incident reportedly occurred at the level 8 and level 9 sections of the mine, which is currently being managed by Heath Goldfields.
The exact number of casualties remains unclear. Some sources estimate about 30 deaths, while others put the figure at 11. These figures are based on bodies said to have been retrieved earlier.
As of 7 pm on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, three additional bodies—separate from the earlier recovered ones—had been retrieved from level 9 and brought to the surface.
There has been no official statement yet.
According to Graphic Online, the Prestea Police have been informed and are currently handling the case.
Heath Goldfields recently took over management of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, a move being contested in court by the current leaseholders, Blue Gold.
