A 49-year-old fisherman has been arrested by police for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl in a ghetto at Mumford, a suburb of Apam in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region.
According to reports, the suspect, identified as Wofa Samuel, popularly known as Kofi Nyan, allegedly raped the minor after accusing her of stealing his ¢80.
Eyewitnesses say the suspect was caught in the act by some young men, who heard him saying, “Mɛwɔ wo de ate ka”, one hour biaa yɛ ¢20”, meaning he was forcing the girl to “repay” the alleged stolen amount through sex.
Reports indicate that despite the victim’s pleas for the suspect to stop and allow her time to find money to repay him, he refused, insisting that she would never be able to raise the amount and must therefore endure the sexual assault to “settle” the alleged debt.
In an interview with the victim, whose identity is being withheld, she explained that the suspect accused her of taking his ¢80 while she was on her way to buy something for her mother.
She said the suspect then dragged her into a ghetto, pulled a knife on her, forcibly had sex with her, and threatened to stab her if she made any noise.
Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for the Akyemfo Electoral Area in Mumford, Peter Nkansah, has called on the police to ensure justice for the victim and to intensify efforts to clamp down on ghetto activities and related crimes in the area.
