A 12-year-old boy, identified only as David, has been reported missing after being swept away by the Okludu River during a heavy downpour at Kasoa American Town in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region on Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Adom News, the tragic incident occurred when David attempted to pick up his younger siblings from school after the rain had subsided.
In the process, his slippers reportedly slipped into a nearby gutter, and while trying to retrieve them, he accidentally fell into the fast-flowing river. The strong currents carried him away before anyone could intervene.
The Ewe Chief of American Town, Togbui Amamasor, described the scene as heartbreaking, recounting how residents watched helplessly as the young boy was swept away by the floodwaters.
Despite extensive efforts by community members, the Assemblyman for the American Town Electoral Area, Shaddrack Boakye Yiadom, confirmed that search operations conducted late into the night failed to locate the boy.
He disclosed that local traditional authorities are expected to perform purification and spiritual rites to aid in finding the boy’s body.
Residents and local authorities have since been urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly around open drains and flood-prone areas, as the rainy season continues to intensify across the region.
